Ancient ferry that by 1815 was controlled by Hull Corporation partly by lease from the Crown. 1821 sub leased to Thomas Boyce and William Chaplin, coach proprietors who apparently exercised monopoly powers, James Acland, 1799-1876, unsuccessfully challenged monopoly in 1831 by establishing a competitor service. Subsequent legal action against him was successful but muted by the finding that Corporation had neglected their duty to the public. Subsequently sub leased to Thomas Walker of Barton. 1832 a further Humber ferry established between Hull and New Holland
