John Julius Angerstein, 1735-1823, was a leading City of London insurance broker active in the marine section of the market. In business from c1770 and operated in a succession of partnerships. Closely associated with Lloyds of London whose reputation he sought to enhance. Retired in 1811. Noted from his philanthropic work, eg with the Patriotic Fund, and for his outstanding art collection which in due course formed the foundation collection of London's National Gallery. His country house was Woodlands
