Traced origin to 1840 when Edwin Ladd established a business at High St, Camberwell. 1868 this was acquired by Henry J and Charles W Davis and traded as H & C Davis, manufacturing and retail ironmongers. 1875 renamed H & C Davis & Co when opened a business at Clapham. 1873 started to make gas stoves which grew rapidly and which was hived off in 1891 as Davis Gas Stove Co Ltd. Soon diversified into making gas meters and became closely associated with South Metropolitan Gas Co. 1895 acquired a foundry at Luton - Luton Langlely Foundry Co, later Diamond Foundry - which became a major producer of castings. Original business incorporated in 1897 as H & C Davis & Co Ltd. Public company 1948. Later builders merchants. 1963 part of H V Industrials
