Traced origins to the 'Come to Britain' movement founded in 1926 by the hotel, etc, industry to attract foreign visitors. 1929 Travel Association of Great Britain & Ireland formed as a membership organisation with some government support. 1932 briefly diversified into attracting overseas businesses to establish activities in UK when changed name to Tourist & Industrial Development Association of Great Britain & Ireland. Set up overseas offices. 1950 merged with government controlled British Tourist & Holiday Board to form British Travel & Holidays Association. 1958 assumed many functions of the Catering Wages Commission. In 1960s promoted establishment of regional offices including London Tourist Board and especially promoted hotel development. 1970 subsumed into newly formed British Tourist Authority
