Business interests established c1796 by John Roupell and continued by his son, Richard Palmer Roupell. Original business interests based on a lead smelting / scrap metal business at Bear Lane, Southwark. In early 19th century bought extensive property at Brixton, part of which was developed, 1840-60, as the prestigious residential area, Roupell Park. This model of speculative property development was replicated by the family elsewhere. William Roupell MP inherited these interests in 1856 but soon squandered this wealth and imprisoned for forgery in 1863
