Traced origins to John Saxby, d1913, who from the mid 1850s made pioneering railway signalling equipment in London. 1861 joined by J S Farmer, d1892, as Saxby & Farmer which was later incorporated. Emerged as major manufacturers. 1901 largely acquired by the newly formed Consolidated Signal Co Ltd of Chippenham, formed by merger of S&F, Evans O'Donnell of Chippenham, Dutton of Worcester, etc. 1920 CSCL and S&FL merged with Westinghouse to form Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co Ltd, later Westinghouse Brake & Signal Co Ltd
