Sir George Colebrooke was the son of an important London merchant, James Colebrooke, and emerged as a leading London banker of the mid 18th century. Much involved in government loans and contracts. Established George Colebrooke & Co of Dublin. Sometime traded as Colebrooke, Lesingham & Binns. Noted for major commodity speculations especially in hemp and later in alum, 1771-73, which led to the collapse of Colebrooke's business in 1773
