Traces origins to 1848 when established by a group of Leeds businessmen as a 'Guardian Society' for mutual protection against 'fraudulent and dishonest' behaviour by merchants, shopkeepers, traders, etc. 1849 renamed Leeds & West Riding Bankers', Merchants' & Traders' Association. 1852 removed 'Leeds' from its title. By 1858 had 3,000 members. Then renamed WRTPA when one of the very largest such associations in UK. Continues in 2012?
