Established in c1760 as a silk mill by Willoughby Ashby and John Cooper, silk throwsters. Subsequently had several owners - Robert Ashbrook, silk merchant, in 1761 and soon after Richard Blackburn, silk throwster of London, and Thomas Tatlock. The latter were bankrupt in 1772 and in 1773 the mill was acquired by Antony Bancroft. He sold it to Charles Davies, silk throwster, in 1781, who subsequently converted it to a cotton mill
