Bridgewater Canal was promoted and financed by 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, 1763-1803, to facilitate the movement of coal from his mines at Worsley to Manchester and also to drain his coal mines. Opened 1761, designed by James Brindley and reckoned first true canal. Branch from Stretford to Runcorn opened 1772. 1872 canal sold by his trustees to the Bridgewater Navigation Co which in 1887 was acquired by Manchester Ship Canal Co to facilitate its construction
