Gabriel Jars, 1732-69, was a French engineer who was sent to England and Scotland in 1764 by French authorities to report on industrial processes and products. Visited, inter alia, coal mines in Newcastle upon Tyne and Edinburgh; mines and ironworks of Dr John Roebuck at Carron, Falkirk; glassworks and pottery factory at Glasgow; Alston Moor Mines, Cumbria; Whitehaven Colliery; Hexham, Northumberland, paperworks; cloth factory, Leeds; steelworks at Sheffield; red lead works at Chesterfield; etc; etc. He was sent on similar missions to other European countries .
