Traced origins to 1798 and establishment of a 'club' to promote the annual exhibition of livestock, produce and agricultural implements. Originally at Smithfield and subsequently elsewhere before moving to Islington in 1861 where purpose built premises were erected. From then accommodated what was known as the annual Royal Smithfield Show which in 1949 moved on to Earls Court. Also used for variety of exhibition and similar events. In decline in 20th century and closed after Second World War. Subsequently reconstructed as a design centre
