Located in North Wales where leading landowners whose land included extensive slate quarries, especially at Vaynol. 1806 added 80 percent of common land to estate at Ffestiniog. Inherited in 1828 by Thomas Assheton-Smith, 1776-1858, from his father, and were greatly extended by him. Also owned copper mines and associated infrastructure such as port and railways including Y Felinheli [Port Dinorwic]
