Wells Wintemute Coates, 1895-1958, was an architect and designer whose training was in engineering. With Jack Pritchard, established Wells Coates & Co in 1928 which undertook design and architectural work; it went on to be known as Isokon. 1932-36 in partnership with David Pleydell-Bouverie. He was a modernist best known for his housing in which he sometimes designed furniture and fittings. He was a pioneer in the design of prefabricated housing. He was associated with several industrial projects - interior design of Cresta Silks factory at Welwyn Garden City, interior of BBC radio studios, Ecko radio sets for E K Cole, furniture for Isokon and Hilmor, etc
