Traced origins to 1798 when established by Jonathan Warren, d1825, in central London as a shoe blacking (ie shoe polish) making business. 1822 joined as partner by Edward Woodd (sic). Emerged as a significant business, its rivals being Thomas and Jonathan Warren and George Lamerte with whom legal cases were fought. Warren's Blacking subsequently connected with Chiswick Polish Co Ltd, established in 1913, then makers of Cherry Blossom shoe polish. Charles Dickens was briefly employed as a boy at Warren's Blacking
