Traced origins to 1946 when established by (Sir) Fred Pontin, 1906-2000, who then opened a holiday camp near Weston super Mare. Very soon after opened another at Weymouth and floated the company. Came to rival Butlins. By 1963 had 23 camps and subsequently opened an additional 10 camps in Europe, especially Spain. Sold to Coral Leisure in 1973 and subsequently a succession of owners including Bass and a management buy out. After Fred Pontin's withdrawal contracted substantially. In administration 1910 but continues in 2012
