Notes:
Developed in particular by the 6th Earl of Balcarres, 1752-1825. Moderate sized agricultural estate near Wigan where coal and cannel resources were developed to the extent that the family became the dominant coal trader in northern Lancashire. Also took interests in canal construction to facilitate this. Also had engineering interests such as Haigh Ironworks. In particular sold coal in Preston where owned coalyards. Also owned West India sugar plantations
