Notes:

Robert Adam, 1728-92, and James Adam, 1732-94, were sons of William Adam, architect and builder, and noted architects of the Enlightenment, introducing a distinctive Adam style subsequently greatly copied. Robert joined his father's Edinburgh office in c1746 and was joined by James in 1754. In 1757 Robert relocated to London from Edinburgh and was joined by his brother in 1763. Noted especially for their work on great houses, but also responsible for town terraces, public buildings, churches, etc. Initially, and speculatively, designed the Adelphi building, London. Their commissions came from throughout England, Scotland and Ireland
