William Adam, c1689-1748, architect and builder, inherited the building business of his father, John Adam of Kirkcaldy. Carried out leading commissions in Scotland, most notably country houses, as Scotland's most noted architect of his generation. Based in Edinburgh from 1728. Father of John, Robert, James and William Adam some of whom were active in William Adam & Co. As builder operated quarries and brickworks. Sometime Clerk and Storekeeper of the Works in Scotland
