The Thompson family traced their salt production interests to John Thompson, senior, 1799-1867, who by 1842 had a salt shipping business. By 1846 also producing salt at Dunkirk Works, near Northwich, and in 1856 they established Alliance Salt Works at Marston, near Northwich. By 1874 referred to as shipbuilders, timber dealers and salt miners and producers, at Liverpool and Northwich. By 1880s known as John Thompson & Sons. Their business salt merged into the Salt Union in 1888 and in 1894 they re-established it by developing Lion Salt Works adjacent to their previous workings. This was done by John Thompson junior and in due course the firm was known as Ingram Thompson & Sons. Closed 1986 when still in Thompson family ownership and when last open pan salt works in existence. Site now [2017] a museum
