Traced origins to 1840 when established by Peter and William McOnie as Glasgow sugar machinery manufacturers and repairers. Continued as McOnie & Mirrlees from 1848, as Mirrlees & Tait from 1851 and subsequently, inter alia, as Mirrlees Tait & Watson. Incorporated 1889 as Mirrlees Watson & Yaryan Co Ltd. From early 20th century also manufactured diesel engines, an activity which was hived off into Mirrlees Bickerton & Day of Stockport in 1908. From 1899 known as Mirrlees Watson & Co Ltd. Converted to a public company 1907. 1967 acquired by A & W Smith & Co Ltd, owned by Tate & Lyle Ltd
