Manufactured hosiery and knitwear goods at Belper from late 18th century, notably underwear and stockings, and also had a wholesaling operation in City of London until 1940 when bombed out and relocated to Belper. By mid 19th century supposedly the world's largest hosiery business. 1914 incorporated when known as George Brettle & Co Ltd. By 1920s had warehouse in clothing wholesaling district of City of London. 1964 acquired by Courtaulds Ltd and subsequently known as Courtaulds Hosiery Ltd
