Traced origins to 1760s when Scrymgeour Hewett, 1765-1850, married into a fishing business at Barking. By 1827, under Samuel, 1797-1871, had emerged as major trawler owners and had diversified into selling fish at Billingsgate Market, City of London. Their fleet became known as Short Blue Fleet Early on were pioneers in use of ice for fish preservation, building ice houses at Barking. Sometime known as Samuel Hewett & Sons and in 1862 renamed Hewett Brothers. 1864 incorporated as Hewett & Co Ltd. Around this time also developed an important fish carrying business between ports and Billingsgate. Also developed a presence at Gorleston, Norfolk. 1868 bought fleet of largest competitor to become a major force in fishing industry. Subsequently closed fishing interests but continued as important fish merchants at Billingsgate
