Government department which had its origins in the Lords of Trade & Plantations, later Lords of Trade, established in 1675 and replaced in 1696 by Commissioners for Trade and Plantations. Reconstituted and given a wide brief in 1784. 1832 Statistical Dept established. 1840 Railway Dept established. 1850 received powers to supervision over merchant shipping. 1853 Science division established. 1854 received powers of supervision over inland waterways. 1861 became known as Board of Trade. Developed multiple areas of responsibility concerned with economic activity, notably the promotion of trade and industry and its regulation - registration and regulation of companies/Company Acts; registration of patents, trade marks and designs; bankruptcy; regulation of factories/Factory Inspectors; etc. 1970 merged with Dept of Technology to form Dept of Trade & Industry, from 2009 known as Department of Business, Innovation & Skills [2023]
