James Meadows Rendel, 1799-1856, was a leading civil engineer initially working with Thomas Telford but setting up on his own account at Plymouth in 1822. From 1838 also had a London office. Initially worked on bridges and roads especially in the south west, but later also on harbours, chain ferries and latterly railways, especially in Europe
