Beaumont family, landowners, were located at Overton, later known as Coleorton, from the 15th century. Their lands were coal bearing and from an early date the family was involved in coal extraction. Huntingdon Beaumont, 1561-1624, was the most dynamic family member, developing important colliery interests in Warwickshire, Nottinghamshire and north east England. Sought to supply London market on a grand scale in partnership with others and used innovative extraction techniques. Bankrupt 1618. The family's Leicestershire mines greatly benefited from the opening of railways. Sir George Beaumont, 1753-1827, a landowner who derived much of his wealth from coal mining on his estates, was a noted art collector and instrumental in establishing in London the National Gallery to which he was a substantial donor
