Notes:

Thomas Brassey, 1805-70, emerged in the 1840s as the world leading railway contractor. By 1826 he was a partner in a land surveying business at Birkenhead and in early 1830s started railway contracting, from the outset working on major projects. In 1840s this work extended overseas, especially to France where he often worked in partnership with William Mackenzie, of William Mackenzie & Co, as Mackenzie & Brassey, but also to the rest of Europe and many countries beyond. One of his major projects was Grand Trunk Railway of Canada and for this established Canada Works, Birkenhead, to manufacture the necessary equipment. Also built docks, sewers, etc. Sometimes traded as Brassey, Peto & Betts
