Dates from 1780s when small quarries were consolidated by Thomas Wright, Hugh Ellis and William Bridges who took over leases from Assheton-Smith family, local landowners. They introduced improvements in transport infrastructure including use of distinctive flat bottomed boats to carry slate over lake (Llyn Padarn). From early 19th century managed by the Assheton-Smith family. 1824 opened a horse tramway and converted to steam c1848. Closed 1969
