Traced origins to c1908 when established as solicitors by Augustus Baillie, d1939, and Carlyle Gifford. Soon developed important interests in investment management especially via the launch of investment trusts, the first of which was formed in 1909 as Straits Mortgage & Trust Co Ltd to provide finance for rubber plantation businesses. 1927 renamed Baillie Gifford & Co when completed transformation to a fund management business. Continues as a leading Scottish investment house still owned by a partnership
