Traced origins to Robert Whitehead, 1823-1905, a British engineer who established a large engineering business in Europe, in particular making marine steam engines at Trieste. 1860s started to develop and make torpedoes. 1891 established a UK torpedo making business at Ferrybridge, Weymouth, to supply, inter alia, the Royal Navy. 1906 Vickers and Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd acquired control of business from Whitehead family. 1921 business in liquidation but assets were acquired in 1923 by newly formed Whitehead Torpedo Co Ltd, a connection of Vickers and Armstrongs. Works closed in 1960s, after diversifying into light engineering, when part of Vickers Armstrong Engineers Ltd
