Traced origins to 1820 when established at Birmingham by John Sheldon, 1802-63, operating as Sheldon & Co. Initially made steel spectacle cases, tobacco boxes and gun shot. From c1823 known as Sheldon & Smith until 1832. Started to make steel toys and in 1830s became noted for pen making and making associated writing equipment such as pencils, escritoirs, letter balances, etc. From 1840s making electroplated items. 1858 renamed John Sheldon & Son and in 1860 sold to become Derry & Jones
