Traced origins to 1630 when established by Earl of Bedford and others to drain the southern Fen. The project was subsequently known as the Great Level or the Bedford Level. Incorporated 1634 and contracted with Sir C Vermuyden to undertake drainage works. Reorganised 1663. 1697 three sub levels established of which two gained independence from the Corporation by mid 19th century. Corporation relocated from London to Ely in 1845. Wound up 1920
