Traced origins to 1813 at St John's, Newfoundland when established by Benjamin Bowring as traders and shipowners. 1835 established a Liverpool office which came to be run by Charles T Bowring as C T Bowring & Co. By 1880s had developed inter alia important transatlantic cargo shipping services, in 1888 forming English & American Shipping Co Ltd. These interests reorganised in 1919 as Bowring Steamship co Ltd. These shipping interests subsequently declined and were closed but the firm emerged as very important insurance brokers in London and Liverpool. Floated 1964. Insurance business subsequently acquired by Marsh McLennan in 1980 when still led by the Bowring family
