Coal mining interests of Bowes family are traced to George Bowes, 1701-60, whose family were landowners at Streatlam, County Durham, and at Gibside, near Gateshead. Developed coal mines on Gibside estate and amassed great wealth. Also had lead mines. Founder member of the Grand Allies, an association of coalowners who operated for their mutual advantage, especially in controlling prices. On his death his estate passed to his daughter, Countess of Strathmore. Her grandson, John Bowes, 1811-85, inherited the estates and continued the development of their coal resources. 1839 established Marley Hill Coal Co which was known from 1847 as John Bowes Esq & Partners. Accumulated great wealth and established Bowes Museum which opened 1892. Incorporated 1886 as John Bowes Esq & Partners Ltd when owned c17 pits, and nationalised 1947
